Twitter rolls out new DM safety control measures

Twitter Safety is up with yet another rejuvenator on who gets to DM you and how you can control and assess the messages you don’t want to receive. It is you who will get to control and choose to not get DMs from the accounts you don’t follow.

In the latest update, Twitter will also filter media and spam content that is potentially harmful or unsafe in any way. Users will also get to report unwanted DMs just by tapping and holding on to the message on mobile phones or by clicking on the 3 dots next to the text on the web.

The micro-blogging site also claims that the push notification for DMs from people you don’t follow and the accounts that you’ve blocked.

Twitter is also testing a shortcut for when you want to reply to a tweet’s author directly. This feature lets the users send direct message replies to a tweet. It happens to make the job easier. Instead of going all the way to the messaging tab, one can directly message someone by tapping the envelope icon.

At the moment, if one is willing to message someone they either have to go to the account’s profile and then text them or go all the way to the sidebar and search for the recipient they are willing to DM. Although this feature is very handy and convenient while directly contacting a person or organization.

The experimental feature is convenient and effective but the feature triggers the “safety” concerns. Unnecessary and unsolicited DMs have been a problem on Twitter or any other platform so to say.

A public defender from NYC, Eliza Orlins talks about how this shouldn’t be done. “One extra step of having to go to someone’s profile to send a DM cuts back on harassment.”, she added. She also asks for a safety feature to not allow this on our tweets.

It is very crucial to have control of your DMs and on your social media as a whole. The views on this new trial are precarious and dicey by the users, what do you think about this feature, is it helpful or harmful?
