Snapchat announces new initiatives for Black History Month
According to the Snapchat Newsroom, in order to provide the best possible representation across all of its services, Snapchat has revealed its celebration plans for Black History Month, which include themed Spotlight challenges, new AR filters, and a new partnership.
First, let’s talk about Spotlight: Snapchat is introducing a new series of Black History Month Spotlight Challenges, in which creators who participate in particular projects related to the occasion will be awarded over $40,000.
The weekly updates for Snapchat’s Black History Month challenges in February will cover a variety of important topics, including:
With the business revealing this week that total time spent viewing Spotlight content has increased by more than 100% year-over-year, Spotlight, Snap’s version of the full-screen, vertically scrolling video shift, has been a popular addition to the app.
As a result, it might also be a useful strategy for Snap to advertise its Black History Month campaigns.
Additionally, Snapchat is introducing a variety of themed lenses made by black artists:
“Today, Snapchatters can express themselves with a collection of augmented reality Lenses created by Black AR creators like Enoch, Masharzi McCann, Kathryn Hicks, and more. On February 15, Snapchatters will be able to explore a new collection of Black History Month Lenses created by a group of seven Black AR creators.”
It’s vital to acknowledge and reflect on social injustices from the past and present during Black History Month, as well as to think about how we can all work to make these injustices less prevalent in the future.
These themed ideas may be an effective method to highlight Snapchat’s desire to contribute to this larger discourse within the app.
