Air on Prime Video revisits the successful partnership between Nike and Michael Jordan

Air is a Ben Affleck brainchild that narrates the collaboration between Nike’s struggling basketball shoe division and the rookie player Michael Jordan. The movie will be available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video from the 12th of May in Hindi, English, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck established their new film-making venture and created Air, first from it. Both of these renowned actors will be seen playing important roles in the film. Matt Damon has played the role of Sonny Vaccaro, the company salesman and representative who got Nike the legendary Michael Jordan to promote the brand. While being the lead in the movie, Matt Damon is also one of the Producers of the film.

Ben Affleck, both the Director and Producer of the film, will be seen portraying the character of Phil Knight, Nike’s co-founder. In a statement, he said, “Matt and I are very excited for audiences to see AIR and proud that it’s the first release from Artists Equity. The movie was an extraordinary experience where we had the honour of working with some of the best cast and crew in the business, all of whom brought passion, persistence, and creativity to a collective effort at recreating a remarkable and aspirational story.”

The Plot of Amazon Prime Video’s Air

Air is a story of dreams becoming reality and talent becoming stars. While the Nike basketball shoe line struggled with losses, to pump life into it, the company looked for a new name to promote the brand. After considering the 1984 NBA draft, Nike’s leadership concluded that the third on the list, Michael Jordan, is a far-fetched dream for the company.

Seeing Michael Jordan endorse Head’s Rackets, Sonny Vaccaro was convinced that it is only Michael Jordan who can change the fate of the company. From here starts the story of a mother who believes in her child’s potential and only wants the best for him.

Despite Michael Jordan being an Adidas fan, Deloris Jordan, Michael Jordan’s mother, signs a deal with Nike for a percentage sale of their product. Hence came the famous Air Jordan which superseded everybody’s expectations and became a steady source of income for one of the greatest sportsmen of all time, Michael Jordan.

The Cast and Crew

While Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are seen in the lead roles, the film also stars Jason Bateman as Rob Strasser, Chris Messina as David Falk, Matthew Maher as Peter Moore, Marlon Wayans as George Raveling, Chris Tucker as Howard White, Viola Davis as Deloris Jordan, and Gustaf Skarsgård as Horst Dassler, among others.

“Air” has a script by Alex Convery. The film is produced by David Ellison, Jesse Sisgold, Jon Weinbach, Affleck, Damon, Madison Ainley, Jeff Robinov, Peter Guber, and Jason Michael Berman. It is executive produced by Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, Kevin Halloran, Michael Joe, Drew Vinton, John Graham, Peter E. Strauss, and Jordan Moldo.

Theatrical Release

Air will be the second film after Late Night (2019) to have a theatrical release before streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Air premiered at the South by Southwest on March 18, 2023, and then was released in the theatres in the USA on the 5th of April. The film grossed $85 million across the globe.

Air Premiere

Amazon Prime Video hosted an exclusive premiere of the movie for all the sneaker-heads, movie enthusiasts and all those who love the game, basketball. The event was a fun one with our favourites in attendance including Nikhil Chinapa, Ranvijay Singha, Celina Sharma and Varun Sood, to name a few. 

Currently, we are drooling at Air Jordans and are all pumped to see Nike and Jordan come together to create this iconic partnership.
